What to Watch For: The character of John Clark is one of the most popular characters in writer Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan universe.

Word on the Street: While the character has shown up in other Tom Clancy movies (Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Sum of All Fears (2002)), this is the first film to explore the origin story of John Clark.

My Take: I would love this film to take off and become a series with Michael B. Jordan.

 

Limbo (2020) R

Omar (Amir El-Masry) is a promising young musician who has fled Syria and is looking for asylum. He is located to a remote Scottish Island to wait with some fellow refugees, all awaiting their fate for their asylum request.   Limbo Website

What to Watch For: The film is playing this week at the Atlanta Film Festival and was recently nominated for two BAFTA awards.

Word on the Street: The film was shot on the Western Isles of Scotland.

My Take: I have heard from my fellow film critics that this film is not to be missed.

 

Things Heard & Seen (2021)

A couple, Catherine (Amanda Seyfried) and George (James Norton), moves from Manhattan to a historic home in the Hudson Valley. Jane soon learns that not only does her new home have a sinister past, but her husband also may not be the nice guy she thought he was.    Things Heard & Seen Website

What to Watch For: The film is co-directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the Academy Award writing team of American Splendor (2003).

Word on the Street: The outstanding supporting cast includes F. Murray Abraham, Natalia Dyer, Michael O’Keefe, and Karen Allen.

My Take: I’ll see anything that Amanda Seyfried is in.

 

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) PG

What to Watch For: Co-writer/directors Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe won two Emmy Awards for their work on the animated TV series Gravity Falls.

Word on the Street: The voice cast includes Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric André, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Charlyne Yi, and Doug the Pug.

My Take: The trailer for this film is fantastic.

 

The Outside Story  (2020)

Charles (Brian Tyree Henry) is a having a bad day. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he has decided to live a solitary life by staying inside his apartment. What to Watch For: The film played at the 2020 Atlanta Film Festival and has been a big hit on the film festival circuit.

Word on the Street: Brian Tyree Henry is best known for his Emmy nominated work in Atlanta, and This Is Us.

My Take: I am a big fan of Sunita Mani, who plays a cop who befriends Charles. Mani was hilarious as Arthie Premjumar in the TV Series GLOW.

 

Four Good Days (2020) R

Molly (Mila Kunis), a long-time drug addict, has to stay clean for four days before she can enter a life-saving drug program. She asks her mother (Glenn Close) to help her work through those four crucial days of recovery from substance abuse and the scars they have created, both emotionally and physically.    Four Good Days Website

What to Watch For: Glen Close is coming off her eighth Academy Award nomination.

Word on the Street; The film is based on a 2016 Washington Post article by Eli Saslow, who co-wrote the script with director Rodrigo Garcia.

My Take: The lead single, Somehow You Do, on the movie’s soundtrack was sung by one of my favorite performers, Reba McEntire.

 

Wet Season (2019)

Ling (Yann Yann Yeo) is a teacher who is in an unhappy marriage where they have become even further apart, brought on by their fruitless attempts at becoming pregnant. Ling becomes slowly drawn towards a promising student (Koh Jia Ler), who his parents have seemingly abandoned.    Wet Season Facebook Page

What to Watch For: The film has had a massive success on the film festival circuit, including winning Best Screenplay at eh 2019 Torino Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film was the Academy Award submission for Singapore in 2019.
