The future of mankind is at stake when a group of young men and women, bred for intelligence and obedience, are sent into space to colonize a distant planet. Christopher (Tye Sheridan), Sela (Lily-Rose Depp), and Zac (Fionn Whitehead) discover that the mission has a secret; that they are being drugged to make them comply with the mission. What to Watch For: The film is written and directed by Neil Burger, known for his movies The Illusionist (2006), Limitless (2011), and Divergent (2014).

Word on the Street: The film was almost given an R rating.

My Take: I always enjoy watching Colin Farrell on the screen. Farrell plays an adult caretaker on the mission


Thunder Force   (2021) PG-13

In a world where super-criminals are taking over, two former best friends, Lydia (Melissa McCarthy) and Emily (Octavia Spencer), reunite after one of them devises a treatment that gives ordinary people superpowers. What to Watch For: The film’s villains are: The Crab played by Jason Bateman, Laser played by Pom Klementieff, and The King played by Bobby Cannavale.

Word on the Street: The film was written and directed by Melissa McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone.

My Take: The film was shot in 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Moffie   (2019)

In 1981, South Africa’s white minority government was in the midst of a conflict on the southern Angolan border. Nicholas (Kai Luke Brummer), like all white men over the age of 16, must complete two years of compulsory military service. Not only does Nicholas have to face the horrors of war; he must also deal with the fact that he is hiding a secret, the secret of his homosexuality.     Moffie Website

What to Watch For: The film has been a big hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Dublin Film Critics Special Jury Prize at the 2020 Dublin International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The co-writer of the film, Jack Sidey, just got a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

My Take: I have heard great things about this film from fellow film critics that have seen the movie.

What to Watch For: Emily Kinney is best known for her portrayal of Beth Greene on the TV Series The Walking Dead.

Word on the Street: The film won the Award of Excellence at the IndieFest Film Awards.
