This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Rialto Center for the Arts and the 40th year of the Atlanta Film Society. In celebration of both anniversaries, the first ever Be Downtown Film Festival will be held at the Rialto on July 22 and 23.  The Be Downtown Film Festival will celebrate the Rialto’s roots with a two-day festival celebrating films from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1990s, with most of the screenings in glorious 35mm just as they were screened at the Rialto during their original releases.

The festival kicks off with a #FlashbackFriday on July 22, showcasing two 35mm 1970 action classics; Gordon Park’s classic “Shaft” (1971) which screens at 7:30 PM, followed by Robert Clouse’s “Enter the Dragon” (1973), starring Bruce Lee at 10:00 PM.

On Saturday, July 23, the program begins with a sing-along presentation of Walt Disney’s “Aladdin” (1992). A 35mm 20th anniversary screening of “Space Jam” (1996) follows at 3:00 PM. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the film, the Rialto will screen the original widescreen director’s cut of Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western epic “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” (1966) at 5:30 PM. Closing out the festival, a rare 35mm print of George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) will show at 10:00 PM. Pre-show festivities begin at 8:30 PM on Forsyth Street (a block featured in Season 1 of “The Walking Dead”), with professional makeup artists and photo-ops. A special event will take place on Poplar Street following the film, wrapping up the festival.
