2015 ATX Television Festival
It’s time once again to travel down to Austin, TX and visit my favorite festival out there, the ATX Television Festival. The festival is a one of a kind celebration of Television and the people that work on the shows that you love. It’s a festival for the fan of TV put on by people that love TV. The festival is Thursday June 4th – Sunday June 7th.
This year the big attraction is the “Gilmore Girls” reunion panel. Scheduled to appear is the creator of the series, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and the “Gilmore Girls” themselves, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel and Kelly Bishop. Other cast members to appear are Scott Patterson, Keiko Agena, Liza Weil, Liz Torres, Sean Gunn, Yanic Truesdale, John Cabrera, and Matt Czuchry. It’s going to be fun revisiting with the town of Stars Hollow.
One of the neat things about the ATX Television Festival is that it not only celebrates the hit shows but also the one-year wonders and pilots that should have but didn’t get picked up. One such show was “Bunheads” created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and starred Kelly Bishop and Sutton Foster. The show was about a dance studio run by Bishop’s character, and Foster is the former Las Vegas showgirl who comes to work at the studio. The show had a cult following, and its cancellation is still being mourned.
Current shows such as “Hannibal”, “Justified” and “Person of Interest” will all have panels. Georgia shot “Rectify” will have a panel with Executive Producer Mark Johnson, and cast members Abigail Spencer, Aden Young, and J. Smith-Cameron. “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” will be represented with a conversation between Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson.
ATX Television Festival also likes to surprise its festival attendees. This year there is a “Dawson’s Creek” script reading. Kevin Williamson will conduct a read through of the pilot episode. A special guest cast will be doing the reading. Who of the cast will be appearing on this panel? I’ll let you know, as this is one event, I will not miss.
The festival is also about exploring the craft of television, and there are a number of panels and seminars on working in the world of television. There is a pitch competition, where contestants get to pitch their ideas for TV shows in front of a panel of industry professionals.
The fest will host its annual “Friday Nights Lights” tailgate party and screening. Held in a lot, guests can listen to bands that performed on “Friday Night Lights” while drinking beverages as they interact with cast members from the show. Then when the sun sets, an episode of the “Friday Night Lights” is shown on an outdoor screen.
So if you are a fan of current hit shows like “Orphan Black” or “From Dusk to Dawn” or a classic show like “Dream On” or “Boy Meets World”, this is the festival for you.
I will be there covering the event and will be posting pictures and stories daily on the CW Atlanta website.
The ATX Festival is June 4th-7th in Austin, TX.
