Pippin, the Broadway musical that tells the story of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his existence, comes to the Fabulous Fox Theater May 5-10.  I had the incredible opportunity to speak with Kyle Dean Massey who will be playing the lead role of Pippin during the tour’s run in Atlanta. Massey, an Arkansas native and self-proclaimed lover of sweet tea and southern hospitality, is a member of the CW family himself as he’s had guest roles on CW’s Hart of Dixie. Check out our short questions and answer session below:

What does it mean to you to be playing the iconic role of Pippin?

Well, this is the first time I’ve ever done a revival on Broadway… So [Pippin] was a show that I actually knew growing up so it’s really fun to be able to perform something on stage that I actually grew up listening to in my car… like the original cast recording. So it’s very cool being a little part of history.

Pippin is known for its acrobatics. How did you prepare for the role?

Well, as soon as I got the job, I had to go straight into circus training. I hadn’t had any kind of gymnastics training in my life but we had an awesome trainer on the show so I learned to do back flips, stand on people’s shoulders, climb Chinese poles, and throw knives. Things I never thought I would ever do…

What would you consider to be the high and low, as in favorite and least favorite, part of the tour so far?

Honestly, the high for me was doing the show in Los Angeles. I have so many friends in Los Angeles and actually keep an apartment there, so it was fun to be able to perform for my friends on the west coast who hadn’t ever seen me perform on Broadway. Gosh, the low? I don’t know. I will say it is tough to do a show like this on the road where you are traveling. You really cherish those days off and most of those days off are spent on an airplane so it’s tough, but that’s part of the gig.

Massey said this will be his first time performing at the Fox and is excited to play such a storied theater. Make sure you don’t miss out on his performance! It’s not too late to buy your tickets now to experience this high-flying hit musical!
