In a city blessed with a bevy of bakeries and more than its fair share of gifted pastry chefs, one would be hard-pressed to narrow the list of best chocolate cakes in Atlanta to just one. To celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day (Jan. 27), CBS Atlanta has compiled a list of five of our favorite places to indulge on some of the Southeast’s finest melt-in-your-mouth slices of heaven. Whether one prefers their chocolate cake light and fluffy, dark and rich or with a deliciously unexpected twist, we invite our readers to add their own favorite chocolate cake destinations in the comments section below. Warning before reading: drooling may ensue.
Three locations in Atlanta
Established in 1979, Café Intermezzo has become an Atlanta landmark among pastry and coffee lovers. Boasting locations open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and after-hours in Dunwoody and Brookwood, (plus its newest addition at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport’s Concourse B), there’s little excuse not to drive to the nearest possible location to try a sampling of its signature brand of chocolate decadence. Dare to try the triple-threat deliciousness that is the duomo torte. Featuring a trio of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse and pieces of cheesecake, this dessert brings new meaning to the word “sinful.” Because Café Intermezzo rotates its pastries daily, there is a chance that guests may visit on a day when the duomo torte is not available. Worry not! Chocolate cake fans also can’t go wrong by ordering the dark chocolate crunch torte, which features chocolate cake layers drenched in chocolate ganache and finished with toffee pieces, or the white chocolate three-layer torte, which boasts chocolate cake iced with white chocolate mousse and topped with chocolate ganache.

Located in the heart of historic downtown Flowery Branch, this New Orleans-inspired bakery features a sublime collection of freshly baked cookies, cupcakes, brownies and cakes behind the glass of its showcase. Chocolate cake aficionados should be sure to ask owner and brilliant baker Patty Phillips to serve them up a generous slice of her O’Brien chocolate cake. This is comprised of lighter-than-air layers of classic chocolate cake topped with copious amounts of peanut buttery cream frosting and chocolate shavings. It’s well worth the drive from Atlanta, but it’s recommended that you call ahead to make sure it’s on the day’s menu. For true devotees, the trip becomes even more worthwhile when one places an order for a whole O’Brien chocolate cake.

Atlanta, GA 30306
For a sinfully southern twist on the chocolate cake, Atlantans should look no further than Virginia Highlands’ hotspot Atkins Park. After indulging in an array of some of the best comfort food this side of the Mason-Dixon line, guests should be sure to save room for dessert. While not in conventional cake-like form, one taste and patrons will know why Atkins Park’s chocolate bread pudding with vanilla bean ice cream made this list. It’s wickedly wonderful!

Atlanta, GA 30346
Foodies love to dine in style at Fleming’s near Perimeter Mall. Showcasing some of the finest steaks and wine lists in all of Atlanta, guests won’t want to miss out on Fleming’s famed chocolate lava cake. Fudge fanatics will definitely want to pop by one of Piece of Cake’s five locations for a slice of its classic chocolate layer cake.
