“Helen Hunt” or Freaky Friday
Our show begins in 1937 Hollywood on the back lot of a studio. The camera follows an unknown woman as she walks the grounds of the studio and men are literally falling all over themselves as they stare at what we can only imagine is her beauty. Soon a female assistant grabs the woman telling her that she is being hunted for by the director of “Helen of Troy” and she is ushered on to a sound stage, already wearing flowing, white robes. Again, all the men stop and stare and as we get our first look at her face it is, actually, Helen of Troy – the face that launched a thousand ships and started a war.
When we first see our intrepid heroes, they’re on their wave rider and Nate tells Sara he thinks he’s found a way to locate in the time stream the newly resurrected Damian Darhk. Elsewhere on the ship, Ray Palmer has – he thinks – developed a way for Jefferson to be able to solely contain the powers of Firestorm the Nuclear Man that he now shares in a symbiotic relationship with Professor Stein. Jefferson wants to free Stein from their bond so the latter can go be with his family and stop gallivanting around the time stream.
Ray hooks the pair up to a machine and switches it on. Things do not, however, go according to Ray’s plan and there is feedback that leads to an explosion that hurls Jefferson and Stein to the ground. When the two regain their senses, things aren’t the way they’re supposed to be: Jefferson’s mind inhabits the body of Professor Stein and vice versa.
Not soon after, the Legends gather on the bridge to hear Nate’s plan to locate Damian when the mind-switch is made known to the crew; Nate finds it hilarious. The team ends up at the movie studio undercover to discover the anachronism that is Helen who is taking to “modern” life. She doesn’t, however, like the fawning and preening over her and walks off the lot. Just as she does, a rival movie studio head is there and whisks her away.
To show off his new starlet, the movie chief throws a garden party that is of course attended by the Legends undercover and – surprise surprise – Damian along with his cronies Kuasa, the Water Witch, and the gypsy woman who helped bring Damian back to life last episode.
Stein, in Jefferson’s body, is crushing over real life movie actress Hedy Lamarr who’s also in attendance. The two speak and Hedy is lamenting that she will not get a break in to movies since Helen showed up so she’s languishing as an assistant. Damian, meanwhile, is telling Sara that if she and her crew leave the party vowing not to return, Damian will let them go in peace.
While Sara mulls this over, Rory tries to get Helen to leave with them to take her place in her rightful time. All of a sudden, all the men in the party go crazy and start fighting each other. That’s the power Helen has.
Eventually the fight breaks up and the Legends end up back on their ship that’s having mechanical problems. Sara tells her team Damian’s offer that they reject out of hand. The team once again take off to grab Helen, this time leaving all the men behind so they don’t go crazy over Helen.
As the men are left behind, they realize why the ship is having its issues: Hedy Lamarr, besides being a beautiful movie starlet, she was also an inventor – in real life – who created and patented an invention that was the basis of technology used by the United States Navy (she also assisted reclusive movie mogul, pilot and playboy Howard Hughes with designs for his planes). Because technology his generally built off of past discoveries, if Hedy doesn’t become a movie star then she doesn’t meet the people she eventually gets her inventions to.
The ladies of the Legends rescue Helen and bring her back to the ship. Once she’s safe, the team goes off to confront Damian leaving Amaya & Zari behind as bodyguards for the ancient beauty. At the studio Jackson-Stein finds Hedy but is soon confronted by Damian and, it turns out, his daughter who’s the gypsy woman who helped bring him back to life.
Jackson-Stein and Hedy hide on a soundstage but are soon found by Damian. Before they can be harmed, the rest of the Legends show up and Sara makes Damian a deal: fight one on one no powers, to which he agrees. As the two battle it out, Ray, Rory & Nate try to take on Eleanor, Damian’s daughter. She rather easily dispatches the trio leaving Jackson –Stein & Jefferson-Martin alone. The two had not attempted to fuse since their mind swap but Hedy convinced them they should.
Sara reaches a draw with Damian but she’s attacked from behind by Eleanor. When Damian starts sucking the life force from Sara, the newly formed Firestorm, with Stein as the body, appears. Eleanor takes him on one on one and is holding her own, but with Jackson as the conscience urges Stein on. Realizing his daughter needs help, Damian leaves Sara and tries to help Eleanor. The duo seem to gain the upper hand on Firestorm, but he soon turns it around. Damian realizes discretion is the better part of valor and he and his daughter teleport away leaving a weary Firestorm and injured Sara behind.
On the ship, all the totem users confront each other; Amaya & Zari (animal & wind totem users respectively) versus Kuasa (water totem user). Kuasa renders Zari unconscious pretty quickly leaving her to talk with Amaya. Turns out there’s a shared history between them; in a previous episode Kuasa hinted at a connection between her and Amaya which she now divulged. Amaya is the grandmother of Kuasa and the sister to the current day Vixen.
While Amaya comes to terms with this Helen, who was lurking on the ship, stabs Kuasa in the back with a knife given to her by Zari. Kuasa turns to water and escapes.
Our show ends with Zari transporting Helen back to her own time period much to the latter’s chagrin. What Helen doesn’t realize is that she’s not being returned to Troy but to the home of the Amazons – the most famous of which is Wonder Woman – Themiscara. There she can live in peace with no danger of starting wars as men vie for her attentions and affection.
