“Return of The Mack” or Welcome Back Damian
Our show begins in England in 1895 as we see a lady of the evening walking down a deserted alley with her footsteps dogged by an unknown pursuer. Cornered, the woman turns around to confront the shadowy figure who walks right past her to a previously unseen body. The figure turns out to be Rip Hunter, former leader of the Legends of Tomorrow, who pulls his best Sherlock Holmes impression and examines the body. He finds two puncture marks on the departed’s neck and exclaims the game is afoot.
When we first see our heroes, Jackson is conversing with Ray about his desire to break up his partnership with Professor Stein, the other half of their Firestorm persona. Stein’s daughter recently had a baby and Jackson thinks that instead of gallivanting across time, Stein should be with his family. In order to sever their bond, Ray thinks they must start with the psychic/emotional link the fused duo shares so he develops a serum that will cut Stein out of Jackson’s psyche. As with any medicine there are side-effects; in this case, the serum affects Jackson’s short term memory.
One of the other team members, Nate, has discovered a pattern to the anachronisms they’re hunting. His work, heavily fuelled by no sleep and gallons of coffee, leads the team to the vampiric mystery in 19th Century England, so off they go.
While in period appropriate costumes, the team arrives at the morgue where the body previously discovered by Rip is being
examined. The first thing Mick does upon entering the room is stab it in the chest with a wooden stake, fulfilling a life-long desire to fight vampires. The team questions the mortician when out of nowhere, some 20th century music is playing. The team discovers that it’s coming from a Palmer-tech watch the mortician has purloined from another body that fell from the sky – the anachronism the team is hunting.
After learning where the body has been buried, the team jets off to the cemetary only to discover the body missing and a not-so-empty grave with Rip Hunter in it searching for the missing cadaver. Back on the ship, Rip tells the team he needs their help to hunt down a bad guy named Mol’as. Elsewhere in the ship, Amaya and Zari are talking to each other with Zari lamenting how she wasn’t able to help her brother and expressing guilt as to being the cause of his death. As the conversation gets emotional, for a brief moment both of their totems emit some energy that combines with each other before dissipating.
Still thinking they’re on the hunt for vampires, the team sets up a trap using Nate as bait (considering he can turn to his armored form of Steel before being bitten). As Nate is walking around trying to look like a snack, a moustachioed Professor Stein appears. Only it’s not the Stein they know but his great-great grandfather. One of Stein’s cohorts sneaks up behind Nate and chloroforms him.
When Nate rouses from his forced slumber, he’s trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey and learns Elder Stein is working for the bad guy Rip is hunting. Elder Stein can’t stay long, however, as he’s throwing a dinner party where the guest of honor is a psychic. Zari & the other Legends are in attendance under cover. The psychic tells Zari she wants to give her a reading and supposedly channels Zari’s dead brother.
Confusion briefly reins as the party breaks up. Zari returns to the ship with her teammates but can’t get the psychic’s words out of her head so returns to her to get another reading. The psychic tells Zari that she needs something of her brother’s in order to get an accurate reading so of course Zari gives up the totem. With it in hand, the psychic is basically like “You are so dumb” because it was all a ruse to get hold to the totem that she promptly uses on Zari knocking her out.
Elsewhere in the house the team frees Nate after discovering their mission didn’t involve vampires at all but mysticism. Elder Stein and company are trying to revive the corpse that turns out to be Damian Darhk through an arcane ritual at the behest of Mol’as.
The team returns to the ship to figure out their next move; Sara is ADAMANT Damian cannot be allowed to resurrected with Rip taking the position that this may be the only way he can find his prey Mol’as. At an impasse, Rip gives Gideon – the sentient artificial intelligence of their ship – a secret command that locks the Legends in with no escape, as he himself goes off to confront Elder Stein.
Sara realises what Rip is up to too late and that her teammate Zari is in trouble so she orders Gideon to fire on itself to create a hole from which they can escape. Back on the ground, the ceremony is in full swing when Rip, through benefit of a time portal, arrives with a cadre of Time Bureau officials. Mol’as talks to Rip through the psychic who’s still in possession of Zari’s totem and before long an all-out melee ensues.
During the fighting, Damian is resurrected and promptly begins to wreck shop. He’s killing TeeBees left and right and just as he’s about to off Rip, the Legends arrive saving his bacon. Zari is able to reacquire her totem from the psychic who realises that discretion is the better part of valor so she and Damian take off to parts unknown through their own portal.
Again on the ship, Sara confronts Rip about his actions that cost the lives of so many TeeBees. Then out of nowhere, a portal is opened and some of the Time Bureau big-wigs show up and take Rip in to custody for his actions. As the show ends, Jefferson realises how much Stein means to him and had Ray reverse the serum so that he could still be connected with his partner.
