“Freakshow” or A Titanic Reunion
Season 3 of Legends of Tomorrow begins with our intrepid time fixers in modern day Los Angeles, California in the midst of a dinosaur stampede running crazy around down town. Confused, the answers are soon made clear when a clean-shorn Rip Hunter arrives with a cadre of Men-In-Black types who open portals that send the rampaging dinos back to their own time.
Our show opens 6 months in the past during happier times when Nate (Steel) and Amaya (Vixen) were in the midst of their relationship being all lovey-dovey with one another. Nate has to run out for a quick errand and when he returns Amaya is no longer there. As we learned last episode their relationship had abruptly ended much to the dismay of Nate. Turns out that Amaya saw her granddaughter on TV fighting crime and she wanted to see her for herself (Remember, Amaya is a castaway from the 1940’s who met Nate on a past Legends mission TO the past).
In the present, Nate still sulks over his lost love but Ray has been busy and developed a shrink ray along with the means to track the anachronisms the Legends caused when they “broke-time”. Seems that when no one was looking Ray purloined some tech from the Time Bureau in order to help his team fix what they had messed up.
When trying to decide what their first mission should be it’s discovered that there’s an anachronism involving the Titanic so it’s suggested they begin there. Dr. Stein is adamantly opposed to this and goes off on a tirade how he never wants to set foot on the Titanic and who ever designed her should be killed (This was an inside joke since Dr. Stein is portrayed by Victor Garber who, in James Cameron’s mega-blockbuster “Titanic”, played the ship’s designer).
Instead the Legends end up in late 19th Century America at a circus of some fellow named P.T. Barnum who’s played by Billy Zane (Zane also appeared
in the movie “Titanic” with Victor Garber). Nate, Jefferson & Ray investigate the carnival and soon discover that the anachronism is a long-extinct sabretooth tiger. The plan is for Ray to shrink the tabby then the team can be off with no one the wiser. Instead Ray’s device enlarges the extinct feline which promptly makes its escape in to the woods.
On the wave rider the Legends brainstorm on how to track down the escaped sabretooth. If ONLY they had someone on the team who had the ability to communicate with animals. Then the light goes on above Sarah and she excuses herself from the rest of the group. She ends up in Amaya’s village and convinces her to come back for one last mission.
The two return and Amaya is greeted enthusiastically by everyone on the team except Nate. While Sarah & Amaya search the woods for the tiger, Nate, Jefferson & Ray hit the local 1870s waterhole. In the woods the ladies quickly come upon what they’re looking for and easily shrink the tiger down.
Nate, however, is having a tougher go of things as he attempts to find solace for his broken heart at the bottom of a bottle. When a local rube insults the circus’ bearded lady, drunken Nate jumps to her honor and gets in to a fight. Actually, it’s not really a fight so much as it is the rube damaging his knuckles and feet on Nate’s armored form, all in full view of Barnum.
The consummate showman, Barnum realises that Nate is a wonder to behold and engages him in conversation. They say loose lips sink ships and liquored lips are the worst as Nate divulges the special abilities of his two comrades. Barnum suggests the group get together later and as an enticement says he’s got some very pliable women who can join them.
While Nate goes off to find Amaya, Ray & Jefferson go off to hang out 1870’s style with Barnum when he has them Shanghaied. Back on the wave rider, hung over Nate awakens to Sarah & Amaya inquiring as to where Nate & Jefferson are but of course he has no idea. So the team heads BACK out to Barnum’s circus. The team searches for their missing compatriots when Sarah realizes they’re being followed. She circles around and knocks the person out who turns out to be Gary, one of the Time Bureau.
Sarah trusses him up and questions them on their ship and learns Ava, another member of the TB who’s not a fan of the Legends, sent him to spy on Sarah and her team. In another part of the ship, Rory accidently lets the sabretooth tiger escape so it’s now roaming the ship in miniature form.
Nate and Amaya both end up captured by Barnum as he puts Jefferson and Ray to work as conjoined twins performing tricks. Barnum blackmails Nate in to turning to his Steel form by threatening Amaya and much to his delight continues to shoot Nate since it won’t harm him.
Amaya, however, has had enough and channels the power of a bear and breaks out of the cage she’s being held in and chases down Barnum. Before she can do any permanent harm to him, Stein & Jefferson form Firestorm briefly distracting her as Nate talks down his once lady-love. Turns out that her amulet which allows her to channel animal spirits has been overtaking Amaya making her personality like the animal she imitates. Luckily Nate was able to get through to her.
Back on the ship, Sarah ends up fighting Ava when she shows up to find Gary who hadn’t been checking in. When the two evenly matched competitors take a break from bashing each other’s heads, the tiny tabby shows up. Much to their surprise, the cat reverts back to its normal size. Sarah, having learned what to do from Amaya, stays still. Ava, not so much; she takes off running down the hall with the tiger right behind her. Just as its about to pounce, Sarah knocks Ava through a portal out of harm’s way.
The anachronism is sent back to its own time period; Barnum decides to stay in the circus business and Amaya decides to stay with the Legends so they can help her control her powers. Before Ava & Gary take their leave Sarah is able to illicit a concern the Time Bureau has about some unknown menance. When Sarah relays this to her team, they all have a hearty laugh considering all they’ve faced and get ready for their next adventure.
