Before the hiatus, there were a few critical plot points at play so let’s run through a brief recap before the recap. The most salient situations include the unleashing of Killer Frost to save Caitlin’s life and Barry planning to run to the future. Keep those major key points in mind. Without further adieu, let’s get into it.
Barry determines that he must travel to the year 2024 to gather information that he needs to save Iris. She is sitting across the room in silence but then insists that Barry to promise to support Joe if she does actually die. He obliges, then receives a distress signal from Star Labs, where Caitlin/Killer Frost is wreaking havoc. Julian musters his courage and confronts Killer Frost face-to-face. She leans in to land the chilling kiss of death, which distracts her long enough for Cisco to knock her down with a vibe wave. While down, Cisco, Julian and HR seek refuge in a metahuman containment cell. Barry arrives, shoves her into a wall and tries to reason with her, but she creates an ice barrier and fleas.
Back to the Future…again
After Killer frost absconds, Cisco and Julian begin bickering about who’s at fault for the uncontrollable Killer Frost situation on their hands. Barry changes the topic and tells the squad that he is going to run to future – again, so he summons Wally’s assistance to generate the velocity necessary to create a portal. They begin zooming around the pipeline until a portal opens; when it does, Wally launches Barry through the portal. He lands and finds a newspaper that confirms the date as February 3, 2024. Upon arrival, Top (the metahuman from earlier this season who causes vertigo) whammies him, causing Barry to stumble and prop himself on a glass door. The Mirror Master sends a crushing right hook through the glass that knocks Barry down.
Barry manages to dash away to what used to be his and Iris’ apartment. It’s completely trashed and debris is scattered everywhere -which is a common theme displayed in the future. Cisco arrives saying he had a feeling that Barry arrived, so Barry asks Cisco to lead him to the future version of himself. While journeying, Cisco tells him that Future Barry pushed Team Flash away and shut down Star Labs, where Future Barry isolates himself. A disheveled-haired Barry steps from the shadows and instantly tells present-day Barry that he can’t save Iris. He adds that he doesn’t know Savitar’s identity and can’t be of any help. Barry feels that he has hit a dead-end and approaches the pipeline to return home. He dashes around the pipeline but fails to create a portal. Our beloved Barry is stuck in the future – OHHHH NOOOOO!
Since Barry is stuck, Cisco brings him up to speed on a few relevant occurrences. One of which is that he can no longer vibe due to a battle with Killer Frost where she froze and shattered his hands. Next, Cisco takes Barry to see Julian, who has Caitlin/Killer Frost locked in a cell. She taunts Barry and tells him that she decided to team with Savitar in exchange for curing her illness. She knows Savitar’s identity but refuses to tell, yet she hints that Wally knows the answer. As a result, Cisco and Barry travel to Joe’s home. Wally is now mute and paralyzed because he suffered a shattered spine from trying to fight Savitar alone. After that, Barry encounters Joe at Iris’ grave site. Joe isn’t thrilled about seeing Barry because he went MIA after Iris’ death – so, he didn’t fulfill his promise to Iris of being there for Joe if she died. Upon learning this, present day Barry immediately makes his way back to Star Labs where he aggressively confronts Future Barry about not fulfilling the promise. Future Barry snaps back saying that no matter what Barry does Iris will die on May 23rd, and it will be the event that breaks him.
Go Home Barry
Barry tells Cisco that he’s ready to go home, NOW! So, Cisco reveals that he created a device (that will I call the manipulator) which disrupts Barry’s speed resonance. Barry prepares to return to present, but he has a change of heart and wants to reassemble Team Flash…including HR. HR has become the author (and lady’s man) he set out to be and is reading excerpts from his most recent book to an audience. Barry zips in, grabs HR, grabs Joe and Julian, takes them to Star Labs and tells them that regardless of what happens in the past he wont forsake them. His motivating speech inspires them to re-form Team Flash as he prepares for a showdown with Top and the Mirror Master. Barry arrives and Top gives him a strengthened dose of her vertigo treatment.
Cisco has rigged the manipulator (the device he used to trap Barry in the future) to assist Barry in battle, but has no way to get it to him. Future Barry emerges from the time vault, volunteers to transport the manipulator, and dashes to the battleground. Top tries to flea, but Future Barry easily apprehends her. The Mirror Master also fleas and makes way to dive through a window. Barry (with the power of the manipulator) dives in behind him and sends the Mirror Master crashing back through with a seismic toss.
News quickly spreads of the Flash’s activity, and even the news reporter gives a shout-out to long overdue efforts of their sorely missed hero. Future Barry apologizes to Team Flash and wants to make amends for his absence. Furthermore, Future Barry finally gives Barry some much needed info. A physicist named Tracy Brand helped him trap Savitar in the speed force, but [unfortunately] the technology used to imprison him was created 4 years after Iris’ death. Nevertheless, Future Barry gives Barry a Flash Drive with Tracy’s technological advances and encourages him to find her with the information.
Barry returns from the future- the camera juxtaposition of his journey from the future to the present day is quite impressive. He gives Team Flash a quick recount of the information he gleaned from his voyage, and pulls Joe aside to tell him that he will be there to support him no matter what.
What’s an episode of the Flash without a brief cut-clip to set the stage for next week? Caitlin wanders through a frosty forest and is approached by Savitar. He offers salvation in exchange for her help. At first she declines, saying that she has no reason to trust him, but once Savitar steps out of the suit and reveals him (or her?) self as a person we don’t get to see, she jumps at the opportunity.
We now know that Caitlin is no longer a part of Team Flash and has been persuaded to partner with Savitar. Who is the mystery person in Savitar’s suit? Will Tracy Brand be able to help Barry trap Savitar in the speed force and rewrite the future. We are much closer to getting these answers. Be sure to tune in to Atlanta’s CW next Tuesday at 8 for answers!
