Welcome back! After a brief intermission, we are well aware that Grodd has kidnapped Harry on Earth 2, so let’s see how it all plays out.
On Earth 2, we see Harry trying his best to outrun Grodd in Gorilla City, a captivation ground in deep Africa. According to Jesse, they received a cryptogram from the gorillas: an invitation (of sorts) to Harry. So, he assembled a team of 9 others and set out on an expedition. Unfortunately, he has been gone for 2 weeks and every other member of his team has been found dead. Jesse finishes relaying the story and rushes to hug HR who, caught up in her emotions, she mistakes as her father.
A future headline foreshadows trouble in Central City due to gorilla activity. Barry refuses to abandon Harry and speculates that saving Harry could also prevent Grodd from planning an attack on Central City. Cisco and Caitlin agree to come along, but Barry asks Jesse to stay and protect Earth 1 (in his absence) and also tutor Wally. Wally steps forward to show Jesse that he’s now a speedster, a revelation that she’s not thrilled to hear.
Barry heads to CCPD asking Julian to cover his absence while he goes to Gorilla City. After some persuasion, Julian agrees, but instead of merely covering for Barry, he tells the chief they will be attending a conference and chooses to tag along (sporting an Indian Jones-inspired outfit). Cisco opens the breach, they depart, and arrive at a location that resembles the old Nickelodeon show Legends of the Hidden Temple. Barry theorizes that Grodd kidnapped Harry because he is the only person in Earth 2 that can open a breach to Earth 1.
Activity on Earth 1
Now that the rest of the crew is gone, Wally asks Jesse if she would like to accompany him on a run. Jesse continues acting awkwardly towards him but claims that it’s solely because of her father’s disappearance. Iris and Joe catch the tail end of the conversation and support Jesse’s claims of being distracted by her father’s absence. Nevertheless, Iris tells Wally to pursue a relationship with Jesse moments before a crime alert sounds off. Kid Flash and Jesse Quick arrive at the scene, but Wally does all the work as Jesse stands idly by, while he subdues the criminals.
After what may have been the briefest showdown to date, Wally approaches Jesse to inquire about her cold behavior. She is disappointed because Wally hadn’t kept in contact since her departure. She also feels that Wally’s speed makes him more happy than she can. Wally asks her to stay on Earth 1, but she doesn’t answer and walks away. At Star Labs, Jesse and HR engage in dialogue where she tells HR about Wally’s wishes for her to stay. HR suggests that she should follow love to prevent a life of regret.
Meanwhile in the jungle, Julian and Caitlin converse; clearly, their chemistry is growing. They continue to traipse over fallen trees and underbrush until the team reaches the location of Harry’s transmission. The team walks into a trap where they are tranquilized – that seemed far too obvious. Once consciousness returns, the crew awakens to find out they are being held in cells. Barry tries to phase and Cisco tries to breach, but they both fail to break out and it appears as if their powers are being dampened.
Harry stomps downstairs and begins speaking in a trance-like manner for Grodd. Harry/Grodd relays that he needs help defeating his leader, Solovar. If Barry can defeat Solovar, the rest of the pack will turn on him and Grodd can take his place as leader and keep them in Gorilla City – thus saving Central City from an attack. Moments later, Solovar walks into the captivity cage and slaps Grodd for not informing him of human presence. Barry tells Solovar that they came by mistake, but Solovar threatens to kill them all in the arena. Instead, Solovar accepts a solo challenge from Barry.
In a massive, gladiator arena Barry and Solovar initiate battle. Cisco coaches Barry telling him to focus on speed punches. Barry’s first take-down is blocked and countered with a jaw crunching forearm. Caitlin suggests a lighting throw, but as Barry circles the arena to gather speed, Solovar jumps and sends a shockwave that thwarts the process. As Barry recovers, Solovar approaches for a finishing jump-smash, but Barry defeats him with an [infamous] Reverse Flash Phase Hand straight to Solovar’s midsection. After the defeat, Barry tries to persuade the assembled audience of gorillas that they’ve come in peace, before he is struck by a tranquilizer that Grodd ordered. Barry awakens, and although he defeated Solovar, Grodd confessed his true plan. He’s now the leader and wants to launch a revenge attack Central City. He plans to have Cisco open a breach to Earth 1.
Where There’s Life, There’s Hope
Harry returns to [normal] consciousness and is briefed on the latest happenings. The crew is still stuck in cages, so Cisco proposes that he die to change the future. His reasoning: if I’m dead, there is no one left to open a breach. After loads of brainstorming, the crew seems stuck on the idea that somebody has to die.
Solovar returns to the dungeon finding Barry cold-faced and immobile. Caitlin explains that Barry went into shock and died. Grodd drags Barry’s limp body away and discards him in a dirt pile – it’s almost unbelievable that a gorilla with super intelligence fell for such a basic ruse. Once Grodd leaves, Barry phases and warms himself out of the hypothermic shock that Caitlin induced. He climbs to his feet, frees the crew, and rushes them away where Cisco opens a breach to return to Earth 1.
We Made It
The crew safely arrives at Star Labs to reunite Harry and Jesse. As Harry recovers, Wally approaches Jesse yet again for an isolated conversation. She apologizes for her behavior and asks Wally how he would feel if she ….. – but Wally dives in for a kiss before she could finish her thoughts of staying. Julian chases down Caitlin to further discuss his feelings, but she shoots him down because she worries that her powers will ruin things. Instead of heeding her advice, Julian invites her to dinner so they can be “scared” -but not really- together. Barry chats with Iris about their recent success. He’s overtly optimistic that they are changing the future, and Savitar can be defeated. Little does he know, that future headline of a gorilla attack on Central City may still come true because Grodd recruited Gypsy to create a portal to Earth 1.
Truth be told, this was an underwhelming episode. But there’s a glimmer of hope that the second edition of the Gorilla City special can reverse the fortune. Since we know Grodd will have Gypsy open a breach to Central City, we will have to wait until next Tuesday to see what pandemonium ensues. Be sure to tune in for all that drama next week on Atlanta’s CW!
