“Invasion!” or Superfriends Part 2
This week’s episode of Arrow continues the CW’s mega-event “Heroes vs. Aliens”, a crossover storyline combining all of the CW’s superhero shows: Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. In Tuesday’s The Flash, a spaceship containing some not-so-friendly aliens, known as the Dominators, landed in Central City. Barry, realizing this was a threat more than he could handle on his own, rounded up Supergirl from her universe, the Legends of Tomorrow from the time stream and Team Arrow to help him combat the alien invasion. The combined superfriends were briefly mind-controlled by the aliens to attack Barry and Oliver, but the duo – along with the newly empowered Wally West (aka “Kid Flash”) – overcame the brainwashed heroes and destroyed the mind-control device. The aliens then kidnapped the non-powered members of the combined teams – Sarah, Ray, Ollie, Diggle, and Thea and teleported them to parts unknown. And thus begins this week’s Arrow…
The show opens with Ollie jogging through the grounds of his family estate. With his exercise done, Ollie goes inside to find his fiancée (Laurel Lance, who regular Arrow watchers know was killed last season) waiting for him in the shower. So, we know everything Oliver is experiencing is a dream.
In the real world the rest of Team Arrow, who didn’t go off to fight aliens, train in the Arrow Lair. Felicity, who went to Central City with Ollie, shows up with Cisco (a mainstay on The Flash, which can be seen on Atlanta’s CW Tuesday nights at 8) in tow and introduces him to the team. The resident brainiacs (Felicity, Cisco, and Curtis) try to develop a way to find their missing comrades. Curtis figures if he has some of the alien tech, he might be able to track them down and it just so happens that Cisco has a piece of the Dominators spaceship with him. After a couple of trial and errors, they realize they need a device that some lady has and they need to track her down next.
Back in the matrix, the entire Queen family is back together and preparing for Ollie’s wedding. A few nights before the wedding, Ollie and his dad – who died in season 1 – are walking down an alley when they’re set upon by a hooligan. Remnants of Ollie’s real life creep into his subconscious when he puts himself between the would-be robber and his dad. Before things get bad, a green hooded figure, who uses a bow and arrow, swoops in and apprehends the bad guy thus saving the Queen duo from harm.
This of course doesn’t sit right with Oliver, as his subconscious starts fighting against what it’s being fed. He ends up at the Arrow Lair, uses his code to gain access (which surprisingly works), and finds Felicity and the hooded figure present. Turns out in this “reality”, Diggle is the Arrow. After some confusion by Diggle and Felicity as to how Ollie got into their secret hideout, a brief fight ensues between the Arrows. Ollie tells them their identities and stuff he shouldn’t know. He says that something just isn’t right with this world, and he begins to have flashbacks to his real life. Diggle and Felicity don’t believe a word he says and send him packing.
Back “home” at the Queen mansion, Sarah (Laurel’s sister, Ollie’s former lover, and current Legends of Tomorrow member) is also having her own flashbacks to the real world as she helps her sister prepare for the upcoming wedding. Diggle shows up at the Queen Mansion and has a one-on-one convo with Ollie as they walk the grounds. Turns out since Ollie showed up, Diggle is having his own glimpses into the real world causing him to question everything he thought he knew. As the two crime fighters try to piece things together, Deathstroke shows up out of the blue and proceeds to kick their butts. Right when it looks as if he’s about to get the best of them, Sarah – a trained assassin – shows up, fights Deathstroke, and “kills” him. WHILE she’s wearing heals! Talk about bad a$$!!
The next “day” at the faux rehearsal dinner, we see Ray Palmer (the Atom) show up with his fiancée Felicity. Malcolm Merlyn is there and chats Laurel up about Tommy (Ollie’s deceased best friend) and a bunch of familiar faces from seasons past of Arrow. Ollie, Diggle, and Sarah have begun to break the mental hold on them and realize that Ray is part of their crew too. They convince him that what he’s seeing isn’t real and that they need to leave. When Ollie tries to get his sister Thea (aka “Speedy”) to leave also, she states she’d prefer to stay there because of the love she has for her parents.
When the group goes outside they’re confronted by some of the most notorious villains from the show’s past: Malcolm Merlyn, a reincarnated Deathstroke, some random henchmen and the baddest baddie of them all, Damian Darhk. A battle royale ensues, and it’s epic. Even Speedy gets in on the action, and the bad guys are soon thwarted.
The team decide their objective is to get to a building named after Felicity, Smoak Industries, which they realize is an aberration. Once they arrive, there’s a portal that wakes them from their current state when they enter. Unfortunately, they find themselves on the Dominator’s ship in space.
Also in the real world, Team Arrow – thanks to Flash and Supergirl – locates the Cyberwoman they were looking for, defeat her, and acquire the device they needed to track their team down. About this time, the captured heroes hijack a smaller spacecraft to make their escape. As they hurtle to Earth, the Dominator armada pursues the heroes.
Right before they’re blown out of space, the Legends of Tomorrow’s time ship (piloted by Dr. Heywood) swoops in, tractor beams the hero’s ship, and swoops off. We’ll have to wait until Thursday’s Legends of Tomorrow for the climactic conclusion of “Heroes vs. Aliens” (does it really have to end?!?). So be sure to tune in to Atlanta’s CW at 8 PM to watch.
