What to Watch For:  The film was nominated for the Venice Horizons Award at the 2015 Venice Film Festival.

Word on the Street:  The cast also includes Gary Oldman and Kate Mara.

My Take:  Shia LaBeouf is always interesting to watch on-screen.

Manchester by the Sea  (2016)

When his brother, Joe, dies, Lee (Casey Affleck) is forced to take care of his teenage nephew (Lucas Hedges)  in his hometown. The big problem with going back to your hometown is you have to see people you left to avoid. “Manchester by the Sea” Website

What to Watch For:  Many film critics feel that Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams are locks for getting Academy Award nominations.

Word on the Street:  Writer/director Kenneth Lonergan has been nominated twice for Best Writing, Original Screenplay Academy Awards for You Can Count on Me (2000) and Gangs of New York  (2002).

My Take:  The film is rated at 97% with over 100 film critic reviews.

The Eagle Huntress (2016)

Documentary that follows a 13-year-old Mongolian girl named, Alsholpan, as she trains to be the first female eagle hunter. “The Eagle Huntress” Website

What to Watch For: The film just got picked as a finalist for the PGA Awards.

Word on the Street: Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Daisy Ridley narrates this film.

My Take: Many film critics feel that this film will be nominated for an Academy Award.

The film opens exclusively at the Regal Tara Cinemas 4  on Friday.

 

Daughters of the Dust  (1991)

In 1902, a family lives at Ibo Landing on St. Simons Island, GA and is set in the old ways of their ancestors. Two daughters have one last dinner with the family before the set off to go north, leaving their families behind. “Daughters of the Dust” Website

What to Watch For:  This is the film’s 25th anniversary and has been digitally restored.

Word on the Street:  The film is directed by Julie Dash.  Her film is the first feature film by an African-American woman to be distributed theatrically in the United States.

My Take:  In 2004 the film was selected to the National Film Registry.

The film opens Friday exclusively at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema

Labyrinth  (1986)  Sarah (Jennifer Connelly)  is a very selfish girl. She is jealous of her baby brother and wishes him to be taken away.  Her wish is granted by the Goblin King (David Bowie), and now it’s up to her to solve a labyrinth and rescue her brother.

3:00 pm

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader   (2010) Lucy and Edmund Pevensie (Gorgie Henley and Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship, The Dawn Treader. They are sent on a mission to find The Lone Islands, and, hopefully, the Lords of Telmar.

Sunday

1:00 pm

Throw Momma from the Train  (1987)   A simple-minded writing student tries to free himself from an overbearing mother by creating a mutual murder pact with his unwitting professor.  Cast includes Danny DeVito, Billy Crystal, Kate Mulgrew and Anne Ramsey.
