Recovery mode in any circumstance can be hard. On the latest installment of Jane, we learn that you don’t have to be the one shot in the chest to go through a recovery or to feel like a victim.
That Intro came out more serious than I intended, but at any rate —
Setting the stage: Jane is having to figure out how to get back into a routine after Michael was shot in the chest on their wedding day by his ex-partner (who was actually international crime boss Sin Rostro in disguise). Xo must repair her relationship with Alba after she finds out her secret, and Aneska is barely skating by posing as Petra when romance comes her way.
Recovering from Heartbreak
After doing some research Jane finds out that part of moving on after a trauma is to get back to your normal routine, as being discombobulated is not only affecting her but Mateo as well. Spending random hours in hospitals and going without his normal routine has made baby-pumpkin-face Mateo fussy, to say the least. Jane and Rafael decide that part of getting him back on his normal routine is getting him into preschool. As of late, they haven’t been able to agree on a school at all. Xo tells Jane that it’s just push back because Rafael is still in love with her. Of course, Jane denies.
In searching for a school and being disagreeable, Raf decides to lay out a confession. He is utterly and completely over Jane. Yep, that’s what he said, over her. And with that being said Rafael no longer feels the need to make her happy, which in turn is leading to him voicing his own opinions and disagreeing more. Do I believe him? Let’s just say I believe that he believes himself.
Moving forward, while shopping around at a fancy preschool, Mateo is accused of biting another child. Jane, of course, goes on the defense and tells the other parent to bite her. Rafael accuses her of sabotaging their chances into the school on purpose, but Jane sticks to her guns and says Mateo is not a biter… until moments later her bites her… #yikes
At a very liberal, hippy preschool Jane and Rafael get into another fight after Jane tries to fix the mistake that she made at the fancy preschool. Rafael tells Jane he no longer wants Mateo to go to the fancy school and reveals that they asked for a donation to forgive Jane’s attitude. Jane is upset that he didn’t tell her the whole situation and their fight draws a crowd. The preschool teacher says it’s okay to fight in front of the children, as long as you make up in front of the children, and she sends them to the ‘compassion corner’ to talk about their issues in front of the class. They work it out and low and behold, they find Mateo’s new preschool. The teacher also gives Jane advice about Mateo’s biting – ignore Mateo, but comfort the victim (this is important later).
In addition to Mateo’s preschool, Jane and Rafael find a new respect for each other as friends, because as he states AGAIN on their car ride home, he’s over her. #boybye
Recovering from Guilt
Though I didn’t bring it up in my previous post, if you recall from last season’s finale, Xo was pregnant with Esteban’s child! What Xo decided on the last episode, if she wasn’t going to have Rogelio’s baby, there was no way in hell she was going to have Esteban’s. Xo gets an abortion.
Weeks later, still completely content in her decision, Xo feels like Abuela knows however is afraid to ask. Eventually, after Jane blurts out, “Just ask Abuela!,” and Abuela overhears, Xo has no choice but to come out with it. Unfortunately, Abuela didn’t know, and she is completely distraught by the news and doesn’t want to speak with Xo at all. In titling this section, I want to be clear – Xo didn’t feel any guilt about her decision, however because of Abuela’s reaction, felt guilty that she didn’t feel guilty at all.
Eventually Abuela accepts that she and Xo are different people and are not going to agree on Xo’s decision, and she must accept it and move on.. because after all, she still loves her daughter! I have to say, I respect that the show had the courage to include such a controversial topic and even more guts to include a woman who stands firm in her decision. Bravo to Xo and the Jane writers.
Recovering from Trauma
As you could have imagined it was going to be a while before Michael could do anything active; six weeks to be exact, among those activities included YOU KNOW WHAT. This episode Jane spends weeks helping Michael with physical therapy and nursing him back to health, which subsequently leads to him accidentally calling her ‘mom’. #yikes #sorrynotSEXY
Dealing with her own trauma, Jane’s having nightmares about the moment she saw Michael laying on the floor shot. Since the night of her honeymoon she hasn’t been able to walk the Maribella hallway and doesn’t want Michael to go back to work at all (and who could blame her). Eventually she lets Michael know her fears, but he informs her that he loves his job and wants to go back. He lets her know that if she wanted him to he would quit, but going back and catching Sin Rostro was always his intention. Jane agrees that she will swallow her feelings and cope with Michael’s choice.
A day or so later Jane walks into the room after Mateo has just bitten Michael. Like she was instructed, she tells Michael she must ignore Mateo, and then comfort the “victim”, and she begins to tell Michael that she’s sorry that that happened to him (referring to Mateo’s bite) and Michael begins to tear up and actually cry.
HEARTBREAKING MOMENT HERE FOLKS! Apparently, it was at that moment being called a victim that made Michael realize that he almost died. He tells Jane that if there was any time to convince him not to go back to work, now would be the time, and she responds ‘not a chance.’ If I were going to award the most heartwarming moment of Jane the Virgin, this would be it people. There’s just something about a strong man crying…I’m tearing up just writing about it.
Recovering from…..yeah I can’t call this one!
So in the midst of everything else, the other undercover villain, Aneska, Petra’s evil twin sister, is still posing as Petra attempting to take down Rafael all while keeping the real Petra in a deep, drug-induced sleep.
I honestly can’t say what Aneska’s recovering from. My guesses would be the unrequited love of her mother, or perhaps a drop or two on the head when she was a child. Nevertheless, she’s working hard to find dirt on Rafael. She starts by spying on his personal computer. While snooping, Scott (the conniving, young manager at the hotel) catches her in the act. As her mother instructed, Aneska thinks WWPD (what would Petra do). Somehow, she concludes that she should sleep with Scott for his silence! This may have been the Petra of season one, but I can’t see now-mother Petra doing that!
After the sex, which she declares the best sex of her life, Aneska is absolutely smitten with Scott. When Rafael confronts her on why she’s been acting so weird, she comes out with it and tells him the cold, hard truth. She however omits the part about wanting to take him down and keeping the real Petra petrified.
Rafael does a SMH and goes on about his day. In front of Petra’s frozen body, Aneska argues with her mother over the phone and Scott comes to comfort her. He adds that if it’s dirt that she needs, he has plenty on everyone in the hotel and he is more than willing to help her take down Rafael…. thus, we might’ve just witnessed the birth of a new villainous duo!
SNEAK PEAK: One week later, Michael is permitted to resume all normal activity. Yes, that includes sex! Will Jane be Jane the Once Virgin? Something tells me it wont be that simple…
Let’s see how long Jane will stay ‘Jane the Virgin,’ while she is married with a toddler and Michael’s still breathing, shall we? Catch Jane the Virgin next Monday night at 9 on Atlanta’s CW!
