What to Watch For:  The movie had a budget of $200,000,000, $125,000,000 more than the original film.

Word on the Street;  Jessie T. Usher, plays Will Smith’s characters’ stepson in this sequel, while Liam Hemsworth plays Bill Pullman’s character’s son-in-law.

My Take:  I enjoyed the first film, so I am looking forward to this one.

“Free State of Jones”  (2016)

During the Civil War, a Mississippi farmer (Matthew McConaughey) decides to quit the Southern army and lead a rebellion against the Confederate army. “Free State of Jones” Website

What to Watch For:  Writer/director Gary Ross has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards, two nominations were for the 2003 film, “Seabiscuit.”

Word on the Street:  The film is based on a true story.

My Take:  Matthew McConaughey has become one of my favorite actors. I always look forward to seeing his performances.

“The Neon Demon”  (2016)

Jesse (Elle Fanning) is an aspiring model who has just moved to Los Angeles. She knew that the modeling world would be tough, but she didn’t know that it could threaten her life. “The Neon Demon” Website

What to Watch For:  This was director / co-writer Nicolas Winding Refn’s third film to compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street:  Refn has described the film as a combination of “Valley of the Dolls” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

My Take: I have heard from fellow critics that the soundtrack for this film is brilliant.

“The Shallows”  (2016)

A young, former pro surfer, Nancy (Blake Lively), takes a break from medical school and surfs on a secluded beach in Mexico. The beach and the waves are perfect; that is until an enormous great white shark attacks Nancy. She takes refuge on a rock 200 yards from shore and must now figure out show to outfox the shark and get back to shore in one piece.  “The Shallows” Website

What to Watch For:  The screenplay was featured on the 2014 “Blood List” which is a list of the “most liked un-produced horror screenplays” of the year.

Word on the Street:  The director, Jaume Collet-Serra, directed the well-reviewed horror film “Orphan” (2009).

My Take:  The film was shot on the coast of Australia, a country I have always wanted to visit.

“Art Bastard”  (2016)

A documentary that tells the fascinating story of New York painter Robert Cenedella, a contemporary of Andy Warhol. It’s an intriguing story of family secrets, money, fame and an artist who refuses to compromise. “Art Bastard” Website

What to Watch For:  Through the years, Cenedella has created controversy with paintings covering subjects such as the Selma riots to the war in Iraq.

Word on the Street: Director Victor Kanefsky is known for his work on “Nightmare Man” (2006), “Style Wars” (1983) and “Bloodsucking Freaks” (1976).

My Take:  The people who make up the art world always fascinate me.

 

If you can’t make it to the theater this weekend then stay at home and watch movies on Atlanta’s CW.

Saturday

“I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”   (1998)  Julie heads to the Bahamas with her roommate, her roommate’s boyfriend, and her boyfriend, but she is still haunted by the previous summer’s tragic massacre. This film stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Brandy Norwood.

3:00 pm

“Thank You for Smoking” (2005) A sly tobacco lobbyist and spokesman (Aaron Eckhart) contends with health fanatics and an opportunistic senator (William H. Macy) while trying to promote his product using Hollywood.

 

Sunday

“Saved!” (2004)    When a Christian school girl learns that her boyfriend is gay and that she is pregnant, she is ostracized by the students except for the school’s misfits. Cast includes Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin.
