After a couple weeks of looking back on prior adventures of our Legends, we finally get a new episode, and it starts off with a frenzy as Chronos shows up just before they were to leave 1958, and he is obliterating the ship, seemingly with Gideon’s help! He’s overridden Rip Hunter’s control, which is bad news for Captain Cold, Stein, Jax and Hunter, but it’s even worse for The Atom, Hawkgirl, and White Canary, who have yet to get on the ship. Why is it worse? Well, Chronos forces Gideon to jump through time, leaving them stranded in 1958!
They wait around for a bit, but after ten minutes, Canary figures out the ship isn’t returning and, despite Atom’s reluctance, convinces them to leave the area. She hot-wires a car, and they take off.
On the ship, Stein and Jax merge to form Firestorm and he charges headway into the battle, except there’s no battle. What there is, though, is Rip Hunter laid out on the floor of the bridge. What there isn’t is Captain Cold, as Chronos has absconded with our favorite rogue. Just to be mean, though, Chronos has also stranded the ship in the temporal zone, where they can’t really do anything and they just free fall through time. Rip rips Gideon apart in an effort to reboot the ship, and it works, somehow. Stein and Jax strap in and get ready for a really bumpy time ride.
Canary, Hawkgirl, and The Atom end up in Hub City (home of The Question! Maybe we’ll see him!) Hawkgirl and Canary are playing the Game of Life and mulling over…um, actual life for a woman in 1958. Atom says he is building a time beacon so the rest of the crew can find them. He turns it on, but apparently he built a fire beacon as it explodes. After he talks about making the next one, White Canary flips out and yells at The Atom and Hawkgirl that the other Legends are dead, and they need to accept that. She storms out saying she needs to find somewhere to belong.
2 years later, The Atom is a college professor and he has Bill Gates’s dad in his class. Hawkgirl shows up, and they wind up celebrating their anniversary in the park. Atom gets out the time beacon to destroy it as he talks about how happy he and Hawkgirl are here. He tells her that he has a surprise for her, which is destroying the time beacon. He also has a wedding ring for her, but just as he starts to slip it out and propose, the time beacon goes off!
Back on Waverider, the crew is worse for the wear due to the harsh time jump, and Stein is hilariously speaking a completely different language (a side effect of this particular trip). Rip lands the ship in the park and emerges with the line of the season: “Sorry we’re late.”
This moment is going to become an, if not the, iconic moment of the show! Back on the ship, Atom is upset that he lost two years, but nothing could have helped that, as Rip explains that going back to 1958 to mess with them would somehow collapse time. They need White Canary so they can leave 1960, but Hawkgirl and The Atom don’t know where she is. At this point, we get a rather creepy glimpse of Captain Cold as Chronos’s captive. He has Cold restrained with some mega super future tech handcuffs. They look awesome! Chronos treats Captain Cold in a jerky way, which is no surprise seeing how Chronos is sort of a jerk. We learn Chronos is chasing the team down to 1960, as we go back to Waverider where The Atom is acting pretty cringe about whether Hawkgirl loves the life they shared as much as he did. He has to go back to their apartment to get the ATOM suit, and Stein agrees to accompany him.
White Canary, is in Nada Parbat training with the League of Assassins. Seeing as how she has done this before, she is really good at it and is kicking the crap out of all of the other trainees. Ra’s Al Ghul takes notice of her and tells his daughter, Talia, to take notice of Canary as well.
Over in Chronos’s timeship, Captain Cold is trying to bait Chronos into telling Cold his plan. He also wants to know why Chronos only took him. Chronos informs Cold he should have figured it out and reveals himself to be HEAT WAVE! We see that Cold didn’t really kill Heat Wave, and the Time Masters apparently eventually found a crazed and starved Heat Wave there. They took him back to the Vanishing Point and trained him. His desire for vengeance made him jump at the chance to chase down the Legends, and he now craves vengeance even more than watching the world burn.
A conversation between Atom and Hawkgirl about their life in the late 50’s somehow manages to get them to realize that White Canary must have headed for the League of Assassins when she took off. Atom, you’re supposed to be a genius! How could it have taken you this long to figure that out? Rip Hunter uses his Shadow Record (an all-encompassing list of all League of Assassins members) to verify that White Canary is there, and they head for Nanda Parbat, home of the League of Assassins! Rip actually manages to sneak into White Canary’s room, but instead of being glad to see him, she takes him down and calls for the rest of the League to help her! She tells the League all of the Legends’ weaknesses, and the Legends find themselves imprisoned. While in captivity, we see Chronos/Heat Wave heading for Nanda Parbat. He’s gone completely psycho, as evidenced by him telling Captain Cold that he plans to go back in time and kill Cold’s sister and make him watch. Then, he’s going to do it over and over.
The Legends are forced to hear the domestic squabbles of Atom and Hawkgirl as he talks about how much he loved her and their time together in 1958, while she says that she was losing herself, although she did love being with The Atom. She apparently hasn’t been able to manifest her wings in some time. Rip mentions that the longer someone stays in a period of time, the more they feel that they belong to it, which has also happened to White Canary. He plans to invoke the League’s traditions in order to help the Legends.
Captain Cold tries to convince Chronos that there is still a piece of his old buddy Heat Wave in there, but Chronos sternly disagrees and takes off to kill The Legends. Rip and the other Legends are granted an audience before Ra’s Al Ghul. Rip invokes trial by combat thinking he will get to face Ra’s Al Ghul, but Ra’s is a foxy devil who informs him he can name a champion. And whaddaya know? He names White Canary (of course)! Rip names Hawkgirl (although Atom laughingly volunteers, his swordmanship skills not even close to what would be needed), as he believes she can get Canary to remember her old self. He’s right, but first we get to see a nice sword fight, and Hawkgirl finds her wings again! While this is going on, Captain Cold maneuvers himself to where he can free his cold gun. He then starts freezing his hand.
At the end of the fight, Chronos/Heat Wave bursts into the scene, blasting League of Assassins members left and right. Canary convinces Ra’s to allow the Legends to go free so they can stop Chronos and man, once they get free, it is on! Everyone shines: from Canary’s great ninja kicks to Firestorm’s fiery blasts! The team handily take down Chronos/Heat Wave. In the meantime, Captain Cold SHATTERS HIS HAND while it is frozen so he can go free. It’s one of the most brutal things I have ever seen in a show like this. Annnnnnd, I LOVED it! Cold gets to the fight scene just as it ends, telling Chronos to reveal that he is Heat Wave to the other Legends. For his trouble, Canary knocks him out with a kick to the face.
Ra’s says he had figured out that Canary was from the future when she showed up and excelled at all that super secret League of Assassins stuff. He releases her from the League, and she gives him some advice about his unborn daughter. Back on Waverider, the team has imprisoned Heat Wave, and despite saying he will kill them all, they are going to attempt to reform him. All of them have a great reason for wanting to see him pull through, but none tug at the heart as much as White Canary’s, whose story is very similar. Captain Cold thinks he’s a lost cause, but hey, at least Cold gets his hand back via some of Hunter’s future tech. Atom and Hawkgirl have a talk, where they both admit to be scared and not wanting to lose the other. Hawkgirl is also very pleased to be choosing her own romantic destiny after thousands of years. They start making out, so it looks like this couple is here to stay!
Rip tells the team that their next destination is the year 2147, as he knows they can find Savage there. He also knows that this part of the timeline is fraught with peril, but it’s now worth the risk. I have been hearing from a few fans of the show that they’d like to see more episodes set in the future, so they’re getting what they wanted! I want it to be next Thursday already!
Until then, See you in time!
