We have arrived. The moment after your plotting and scheming has led the man of your dreams to cheat on his girlfriend and kiss you. That amazing (literal) taste of victory is so sweet however, as Rebecca soon finds out, comes with a price.
So as you can imagine, Rebecca is all hunky dory about the kiss she and Josh shared in the courtroom; Josh on the other hand, as you can also imagine, is riddled with guilt. Rebecca squeals with Paula in excitement while Josh consults Father Brah on what to do next.
Father Brah puts it simply: Ask for forgiveness. Even though Josh is sure Valencia will break up with him, he knows the right thing to do is to tell her about the kiss.
Josh tells Rebecca the “bad news” about Valencia likely dumping him and that his plan after that is to go to Hawaii (on Flight 425) for Hector’s surf competition. Yeah, because when I talk about the plane I’m getting on, I usually give my exact flight information. This boy is asking to get stalked!
He admits to Rebecca that he should never have grabbed her or squeezed her … and gets dangerously close to doing it again. He bolts out of Rebecca’s place before anything goes down and Rebecca’s left with a conundrum. What now?
Not that my opinion is worth anything here, but I would have suggested she wait and see what happens next with Josh and Valencia. Paula’s suggestion: Go to Hawaii (DUH)!
We are taking a different type of sugar pill this episode, with all puns intended. Darryl held a staff meeting to say that he’s bisexual. Sweet right? (yeah, not so much). He breaks into song and, in some of my favorite lines attempting to break bisexual stereotypes, notes, ‘I’m not a h*e, I take things slow, until I feel at ease.’ And that he is ‘Getting by (bi)’. LOL.
Also sweet? After uncovering the biggest water scandal the town has ever seen, Rebecca makes the front page of the paper. Even bigger, the Mayor drops by Rebecca’s office to tell her he wants to award her the key to the city!
Unfortunately, Rebecca has bigger problems…
The Big Pill!
She’s broke! That’s right. If you haven’t noticed, Rebecca has been ballin’ like Shaq since she touched down in West Covina. Dropping a $1000 here, $2000 there. Never once did it occur to her that she makes quite a bit less money than she did in New York. It also never occurred to her to ask how much she even makes now. In fact she admits she hasn’t checked her bank account since 2011. Her car even gets repossessed while she is at work. She has no clue how she will buy the ticket to Hawaii now, her only suggestion was to sell her car – her repossessed car. No, she wasn’t joking. This Jewish American Princess knew nothing about money and, with all her cards being declined, she wasn’t getting to Hawaii.
Alas, a light at the end of the tunnel, Rebecca’s mother called to say that she was proud of her for the work that she had done and the fact that she was getting the key to the city; so proud of her that she was sending her a package. Assuming it was her mother’s rugelach, Rebecca was content with the fact that she could at least eat desert even though she was broke!
To her surprise, it was actually the Garfinckle Ring, a cherished family heirloom. She pawns it (of course), buys her ticket and does a little shopping for Hawaii (responsible, right?)
Upon exiting a boutique, she overhears Valencia talking to her mother over the phone. She notes that Josh has been acting weird and she thinks he’s finally going to propose to her. For the first time, Rebecca actually feels bad about what she’s doing. She rushes to tell Josh not to tell Valencia about their kiss, but it’s too late. From outside their door she hears them arguing about the kiss and watches them through the window. Valencia says that she’s mad but that she gets it. That Rebecca is smart and different. She also says that she forgives him. Valencia asks if Josh loves Rebecca and his response was crushing. ‘No. God No.’ Gracious from Valencia’s forgiveness, Josh says he’s not going to Hawaii as he would rather spend his time with Valencia.
Realizing that she may not be the protagonist but the ‘villain’ in her own story, Rebecca feels defeated. When accepting the key to the city, she could barely see straight. Overwhelmed with the thought of Josh not loving her, she ends the ceremony with one word, “Thanks,” then high tails it out of the park for the plane to Hawaii.
I would say that this woman needs help. One might even argue that it’s a good thing that before she could get settled on the plane, she notices she’s sitting right next to her therapist. After avoiding her for weeks, what better way to spend a 5 hour plane ride than with a little bit of therapy. Here’s hoping that Rebecca lands safe and sane!
