We’ll call this episode: Vixen. Nooo, not THAT type of “vixen” but the DC character. We’ll get to that in a moment, but the episode begins with Felicity going through physical therapy with Curtis’ husband after having the chip Curtis (who we learn is also an Olympic-level athlete) invented installed. Much to everyone’s disappointment, Felicity still can’t walk. As Oliver attempts to console her after leaving the office, Damien Dahrk confronts them. Damien tells Oliver (in front of an unknowing Felicity) that he has his son William (ruh roh!!) Knowing he’ll need help to get his son back and to combat Damien’s Jedi-like abilities, Ollie calls on the aid of an old friend Mari McCabe, aka Vixen, played by Megalyn Echikunwoke (Isabelle Tyler in “The 4400”).
Vixen’s character was first introduced in the DC television universe via CW Seed, the CW Network’s exclusive mobile app, in a 7-episode animated series (if you have yet to watch this episode, I encourage you to download CWSeed and watch this first). We learn that Mari is descendent from a line of African royalty and living in Detroit having never known her heritage or parents. She is bequeathed a necklace that allows her to channel the attributes of African animals (think strength of an elephant, speed of a cheetah, etc). As a distant relative attempts to violently liberate the powerful totem from Mari, she comes across Arrow and The Flash – voiced by Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin respectively – who help save her life and the totem.
In Team Arrow’s first Damien-encounter with Vixen at their side, the result is the same as it had been without her: He beats them pretty handily. As they regroup in the Arrow Lair (Arrow Cave?), Mari surmises that the secret behind Damien’s power may not be internal but rather external, like the necklace she wears. Captain Lance, who had been to Damien’s offices on several occasions, explains that he’s seen a statue that could be what they’re looking for. Before the team can attempt to exploit this possible weakness, Damien – while still holding William hostage – pushes up the deadline for Oliver to drop out of the mayoral race. Damian feels after his face-to-face meeting with Green Arrow, despite his relative easy victory over him, that it would be prudent to get Oliver out of the race sooner rather than later. (Sidenote: It’s remarkable Damien has yet to figure out that G.A. and Oliver Queen are one in the same person). In order to protect his son, Oliver drops out of the race and gives his support to his opponent, who is secretly Damien’s wife.
Meanwhile, Felicity has to come to terms with the notion that her knight-in-shining [green] armor kept the “baby daddy” secret from her. Her hurt, anger and frustration is exacerbated when she further learns that not only did Barry know about the secret love child, but Malcolm Merlyn also knew about William before she did. During a heart-to-heart time with Samantha, William’s mother, Sam tries to assure Felicity that it wasn’t Oliver’s decision to keep their love-child a secret from her and to basically not be so hard on him.
During the final quarter of the episode, the big showdown between Team Arrow and Damien occurs at his elegant mansion. While Ollie attacks him head on, Vixen uses the power of the cheetah to spirit away the totem. Apparently unaffected by not being in close proximity to it, Damien proceeds – as always – to Vader-choke Speedy and Green Arrow. Felicity then tells Vixen to go to Plan B, which is to destroy the totem. Using the power of the elephant, gorilla and everything else in her arsenal, Vixen smashes the totem against a rock causing Damien to immediately lose his power. Oliver then quickly dispatches what has, up to now, been his greatest nemesis.
As the episode is about to wrap up, we find Ollie and Felicity decompressing over the recent events: the battle with Damien, the “secret” child, etc. Felicity pours her heart out to Oliver and lets him know that she can’t be Mrs. Queen due to all the secrets and gives him back the engagement ring. As she does, her foot begins to move; next thing you know she puts one foot in front of the other, as if she were the Winter Warlock, and walks right out the door. That leaves us hanging until March 23rd before we find out what’s going to happen with Olicity (Felolliver?) and what’s going on in the flashbacks on the island.
