In a world where there are pregnant virgins and multiple high-profile female crime bosses, anything is possible. And although that may be true, that doesn’t mean you will get all that you want all the time. You may have your heart crushed, dreams stomped on, or be killed in an instant. Am I being too bleak here? Good. Because although Jane comes out of this episode on top, I have to say my heart goes out to everyone else in this episode as doors get slammed in there faces left and right.
JANE’S VIRGINITY VS. HOT CHAVEZ
So, we last left Jane contemplating whether she still wanted to wait for marriage. After all she is a virgin mom, and life is much more complicated and different than she expected when she made the promise of virginity to Abuela. Not wanting anything complicated, she gets in the ring.
Round 1: As we saw last week, Jane has crazy chemistry with her ex-professor Jonathan Chavez (I prefer the “Hot Chavez” moniker myself). Jane goes on her first successful dinner date with Hot Chavez and is glistening (literally) with desire. After a sidebar with Xiomara, she’s thinking that maybe it’s time. Hot Chavez makes her dinner, which everyone knows means sex is on the table. They start making out hot and heavy, then Chavez mentions to Jane that she would be his first since his divorce. Jane does him one better and mentions that he would be her first ever. But, then Jane mentions her promise to Abuela. You can literally see the flowers wilt in the room and Jonathan’s libito with them. He is down for the count.
Round 2: So maybe mentioning your promise of chastity to your grandmother right before you’re about to have sex wasn’t the best move. Also, who can blame Jonathan in assuming that Jane would want to be serious with someone she would lose her virginity to. Jane urges Jonathan (via text) that she’s not looking for anything serious and they begin sexting. Back in the game, this leads Jane rushing over to Jonathan’s house … pants-less! (she is very daring for a virgin, I must say). And since she was rushing (speeding), the cops pull Jane over … pants-less!
He lets her go but right before he does, she notices his badge and has a flashback to Michael … and it’s all down hill from there, folks.
Seconds into Jonathan’s house (still pant-less!) she starts to have a break down and begins to cry. At this point, I feel bad for Jonathan. Once again, his flowers wilt, and Team Virginity remains the undefeated victor.
Though I didn’t think much of this storyline before, Xo and Rogelio’s relationship gives you a front seat into the outcomes of life — idealism versus realism. We last left our reunited couple at a crossroads, as Rogelio had just proposed under the assumption that Xo would want to have children one day. Xo however feels like in her 40’s, she may want to focus on herself.
In this episode, she contemplates freezing her eggs to possibly have children sometime in the future (upon Rogelio’s request). After some consideration, she realizes that she loves having the choice to change a diaper or to just continue being a fabulous lounge-singing-diva-grandma. Xo couldn’t give up this idea of having a choice and freedom, so although she loves him dearly she gives Rogelio his ring back closing the door to children and their engagement. 😦
Sin Rostro No More
The best plan (quite possible) that I’ve seen the detectives come up with also included a sad and much-needed ending. Toward the episode’s end, train-wrecked Louisa gets into a drunken car wreck and was rushed to the hospital. Not as heartless as one may have thought, the infamous Rose (Sin Rostro) shows up to the hospital to check on Louisa and tells her that she needs to move on with her life as they have no future together. I applaud Rose for keeping it 100 with Louisa, but seconds later it is revealed that she is in a trap. Louisa’s accident was staged to get Rose to the hospital, and she is met by the end of Detective Barnett’s gun.
Not a sucker, Rose turns the gun on Barnett and takes her hostage. Rose shoots Barnett in the shoulder, and makes a B-line for the exit, however, doesn’t get very far. Upon Michael’s team arriving as back up, they discover Rose dead on the hospital floor, strangled by blue silk ties (Mutters signature). Louisa, of course, is heartbroken.
When One Door Closes Another One Opens
In an attempt to help Petra become acclimated to motherhood before the baby is born, Rafael suggests that she spend some time with Jane. This, of course, was a difficult endeavor as Jane and Petra are like oil and water. Jane throws Petra a baby shower and they come to an understanding that they need to get along for the sake of their family. Though, what doesn’t slip through the cracks of this girl bonding time is the fact that Rafael and Petra kissed. Petra confronts Jane on the issue and Jane assures her that she doesn’t want their baby daddy.
Now, the hard part – telling Rafael. Jane confronts Rafael the kiss, and Rafael can’t contain his feelings any longer. He tells Jane that he still loves her. Jane then shuts the door right in Rafael’s face and says that her feelings have changed, and she no longer loves him. As far as I am concerned, the Maribella is now the Heartbreak Hotel. #PoorRafael
Then, like magic, like clockwork, like that other girl that was his girlfriend never existed, I had to rub my eyes twice to make sure Jane and I weren’t imagining it; Michael comes to the door. He explains that Rose is dead and that he only pushed her away to make sure that she would be safe while he finished the case. He proclaims his love for Jane and asks if she still loved him. And in a beautifully timed moment like this that only happens in the movies (and in TV shows), she says yes.
I want to say that I am awestruck, however I knew somehow Michael and Jane would find their way back to each other, but is it forever? And will he be the one to take our Jane’s virginity? Something tells me it won’t be that simple. Watch Jane the Virgin Monday nights at 9pm on Atlanta’s CW to find out if Jane’s returned love is everlasting.
