“Divergent” (2014)

Set in the future, people are living in the ruins of Chicago as part of a society that is divided into five distinct factions. These factions are based on distinct personality characteristics such as self-sacrifice or the quest for knowledge. Beatrice Prior (Shaliene Woodley) will have to choose which faction to join. Her problem is she discovers that she is “Divergent,” meaning she doesn’t fit into any one faction. Will she pick a faction based on what her head or her heart tells her? “Divergent Website

What to Watch For: Based on the bestselling novels by Veronica Roth, this is another attempt to find a Young Adult series that can challenge the “Catching Fire” film series.

Word on the Street: Early indications are that fans of the books are very happy with this adaption, especially with the casting of Woodley as Beatrice and Theo James as “Four,” her love interest in the film.

My Take: I loved the books and feel that Shaliene Woodley is one of the best young actresses out there.

“Muppets Most Wanted” (2014)

While on a world tour hitting cities as Berlin and London, the Muppets gang gets involved with a jewel thief named, Constantine, who looks just like Kermit the Frog. Now, can Kermit take down his doppelganger and save his reputation? “Muppets Most Wanted” Website

What to Watch For: As with the big 2011 hit, “The Muppets”, there are a ton of celebrity cameos in this film including Usher, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Lady Gaga.

Word on the Street: Tina Fey, who plays Nadya, a Russian GULAG officer, is said to be the highlight of the film.

My Take: I loved “The Muppets” film and picked it as one of my ten best for that year, so I am really looking forward to this one.

Bad Words

“Bad Words” (2014)

Guy (Jason Bateman) is a 40 year-old high school dropout. He has never gotten over his bad experiences in school and finds a loop-hole in the rules of the national spelling bee. He enters the contest and along the way meets a reporter (Kathryn Hahn) and a fellow contestant (Rohan Chand), both he befriends. “Bad Words” Website

What to Watch For: Jason Bateman is making his directorial debut with this R rated comedy.

Word on the Street: Fans of films like “Bad Santa” (2003) and “Bad Teacher” will enjoy this very adult comedy.

My Take: I like Jason Bateman, the actor, so it’s going to be fun to see what he can do as a director.

Dark House

“Dark House” (2014)

Nick (Luke Kleintank) is a clairvoyant and, after his mother’s death, he discovers he has inherited an old home in the isolated country. So, Nick, his pregnant girlfriend (Alex McKenna), and his best friend, Ryan (Anthony Rey Perez), decide to check out the home. It’s a decision that may cost them their lives. “Dark House” Trailer

What to Watch For: The man who brought you the horror film, “Jeepers Creepers” (2001), Victor Salva, is back with a new take on the haunted house theme.

Word on the Street: This film is said to combine a number of horror genres.

My Take: We can always use a good horror film this time of the year.

If you can’t make it to the theater this weekend, then stay home and watch movies on CW69.
