“42” (2013)

The film tells the courageous story of Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman), who was signed by Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) to the Brooklyn Dodgers to become the first African-American player to break the baseball “color line.” 42 Website

What to Watch For: The studio is taking a big risk with little know Chadwick Boseman in the lead role, as he has mostly only done television roles.

Word on the Street: Harrison Ford is being talked about as giving an Academy Award worthy performance, as the fiery Rickey.

My View: I am excited about this film, as writer/director Brian Helgeland is responsible for writing some of the best screenplays out there, including 2003’s “Mystic River’ and 1997’s “L.A. Confidential.”

“Starbuck” (2012)

David (Patrick Huard) is in a world of trouble. He has a low paying job delivering meat for his family’s butcher shop. He owes money to the mob and to complicate matters even more, he has just found out that his policewoman girlfriend, Valerie (Julie LeBreton), is pregnant with his child and doesn’t want him to have anything to do with the child once it’s born. But that’s nothing compared to the news, that under the name Starbuck David deposited sperm at a local sperm bank over 600 times, resulting in David fathering over 500 children. Now David decides to find out what kind of kids his children have become. Starbuck Website

What to Watch For: This French Canadian film has been warming the hearts of film festival audiences around the world.

Word on the Street: Patrick Huard is said to have accomplished the impossible – make a goofy, unlikeable guy, likeable.

My View: This is one of those films that could be a big art house hit due to word of mouth.

“Trance” (2013)

Trance

Source: Fox Searchlight

Simon (James McAvoy) works as an art auctioneer at a prestigious auction house. While auctioning off a painting worth millions of dollars, the auction house is hit by robbers, resulting in Simon getting hit over the head. When he wakes up, the burning question everyone has, including the robbers is, where is the painting? But Simon can’t remember a thing about the robbery. Trance Website

What to Watch For: Rosario Dawson, won the part of the hypnotist hired to work with Simon so that he remembers what happened. Dawson beat out an all-star lineup of Scarlett Johansson, Eva Green and Zoe Saldana.

Word on the Street: The film is highly anticipated as it comes from director Danny Boyle, the man responsible for bringing us such hits as “127 Hours” (2010), “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008) and “Trainspotting” (1996).

My View: I think this will be one of those films that audience members should plan on going somewhere right after to film, so that they can discuss the movie in depth.

“Scary Movie 5” (2013)

When Dan (Simon Rex) and Jody (Ashley Tisdale) bring home their adorable baby from the hospital, they begin experiencing weird things in the home. It turns out that there is a demon in the house and it’s not happy. Now the couple will try just about anything to get rid of the nasty demon. Scary Movie 5 Website

What to Watch For: The film was shot here in Atlanta.

Word on the Street: This is the first “Scary Movie” of the franchise not to have Anna Faris in it, but makes up for it with appearances of Bow Wow, Snoop Dogg, Terry Crews, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen.

My View: I am thinking this film series is just about out of gas.

If you can’t go to the theatre this weekend, stay at home and watch movies on CW69.
