Opening this week at a theatre near you:
When his son is wrongfully convicted of distributing drugs, John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson) makes a deal with the Feds. He agrees to become an undercover informant and gather information on the leader (Benjamin Bratt) of a drug cartel. But, has the love for his son gotten Matthews in a situation that John and his family may not survive?
What to Watch For: The film was inspired by a documentary about drug runners providing information about drug cartels for reduced time in prison.
Word on the Street: 2013 could be the year of The Rock at the movies with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Fast and Furious 6, and the action film, Pain & Gain, all releasing this year.
My Take: Johnson continues to appear at WWE events, so his fan base should help open this film to a big box office.
Dark Skies (2013)
Lacy (Keri Russell) and Daniel (Josh Hamilton) are a young couple with two kids living in the peaceful suburbs. But strange things begin happing. The home alarm goes off constantly in the middle of the night, birds crash into their home and items are discovered to mysteriously be stacked to the ceiling in their kitchen. Now it seems that their children are being targeted by unknown forces, and the family must battle something they never expected to attack.
What to Watch For: Director Scott Stewart started his film career as a special effects artist and has gone on to direct Legion (2009) and Priest (2011).
Word on the Street: The film is from the producer of the Paranormal Activity and Insidious movies, so expect plenty of scary moments.
My Take: I am always interested to watch anything that Golden Globe award winning actress Keri Russell is in.
West of Memphis (2013)
A documentary exploring the attempts to free three men known as the West Memphis Three, who were convicted of murdering three eight year old boys in the early 90’s.
What to Watch For: The film gives the audience extraordinary access into the lives of the three men in prison and the men and women who have been working to free them.
Word on the Street: The West Memphis Three has had quite a bit of celebratory support who appear in the film, including musicians Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and director Peter Jackson.
My Take: The film is the fourth documentary on the West Memphis Three and could be the best.
