The Guilt Trip (2012)

The Guilt Trip

Source: Paramount Pictures

Andy (Seth Rogen) is an inventor and is going on a road trip of a lifetime to sell his newest invention. He decides to visit his mother (Barbra Streisand), but it’s an unfortunate mistake as she wants to accompany him on his trip. The Guilt Trip Website

What to Watch For: This is Barbra Streisand’s first starring role since her 1996 film “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” Streisand is a veteran of comedic films and did several of the “Meet the Fockers” films in recent years.

Word on the Street: The director, Ann Fletcher, actively recruited Streisand for the role, one that she came close to turning down…until Streisand’s son talked her into it.

My Take: The film will do well if the chemistry between the mother (Streisand) and the son (Rogen) works.

This is 40 (2012)

Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) are dealing with the reality of marriage with children. Their life isn’t what they thought it was going to be, and now that Pete’s record label is having trouble, so is their marriage. This is 40 Website

What to Watch For: This is a sort of sequel to the 2007 hit “Knocked Up” and uses the characters played by Rudd and Mann from the first film. This film is written (as was “Knocked Up”) and directed by Judd Apatow and stars his real life wife, Mann. The stars of “Knocked Up,” Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl, will not be making an appearance.

Word on the Street: Albert Brooks who plays Pete’s father, and John Lithgow who plays Debbie’s father, are said to steal every scene they are in. Preview audiences have just gone nuts over them.

My Take: This could be the film that takes Leslie Mann from her normal supporting actress roles to starring roles.

Jack Reacher (2012)

Jack Reacher

A sniper shoots into a rush hour crowd killing 5 people with six shots. Former Army Military Police office, Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise), is given the case to investigate and, as he works the case, there is someone out there trying to stop him from solving the crime. Jack Reacher Website

What to Watch For: The film is based on the bestselling book, “One Shot” by Lee Child. If the film is successful, this could be another film series for Cruise to star in.

Word on the Street: When fans of the book series complained that Cruise was too small in stature to play Reacher, the books author, Child, came out and said that Cruise was perfect for the role because he could bring the determination and dedication to the screen that the character has in the book.

My Take: Any movie that has Robert Duvall in it is worth seeing.

Café De Flore (2012)

The story of two loves, one set in present day Montreal between a man, Antoine (Kevin Parent) and his girlfriend (Evelyne Brochu), which is complicated by Antoine’s ex-wife (Helene Florent). The other is set in the 1960’s, is the love between two children that have Downs Syndrome, complicated by the over protective mother of one of the children. Cafe De Flore Website

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for 13 Genie awards (think the Canadian Academy Awards) and won three.

Word on the Street: The over protective mother is played by Vanessa Paradis, who has gotten rave reviews for her performance.

My Take: Looking at the critic reviews, it’s a movie that you either fall in love with or just want the film to be over.

Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (2012)

A young couple are separated and must travel through the wonderful and mystical world of “Cirque du Soleil,” determined to be reunited, all in the magic of 3-D. Cirque du Soleil Website

What to Watch For: Filmmaker James Cameron, who certainly knows how to maximize the wonder of 3-D (“Avatar”), is producing this film.

Word on the Street: They picked the right director for this film, as Andrew Adamson has directed the first two “Shrek” films and two of “The Chronicles of Narnia” films.

My Take: If it comes even close to the spectacle of “Cirque du Soleil’s” traveling shows, it will be one amazing film.

If you can’t make it the theatre this weekend, stay at home and watch movies on CW69.
