With Supernatural returning on an all-new night (Wednesdays at 9pm) and with an all-new showrunner (Jeremy Carver) we should expect some changes. Here’s a giant one in the form of a red rosy heart: Sam Winchester will have a recurring love interest. That’s right folks, there’s going to be some Winchester romance this season with Amelia (Liane Balaban), “a doctor in her late 20s to early 30s, and when we first meet her, she’s overwhelmed by a devastating tragedy,” Zap2it reports.

I’m all for some romance. I watch Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie primarily for some shirtless scenes and love-triangle drama. But Supernatural has been a sanctuary, a place where Dean Winchester flirts with waitresses and Sam scoffs at the idea of love. Relationships are so time consuming when you have to battle wendigos and yellow-eyed demons. Going into season 8, I’ll be hesitant to embrace Amelia, but there’s still a chance she could win my heart. Why? Of the very, very few love interests who came between the Winchester bromance, one fiery female actually enhanced the series.

In seasons 3 and 4 we meet Ruby (Katie Cassidy, Genevieve Cortese), a snarky demon and Sam’s lover. Cassidy shaped Ruby into a strong-willed girl who may be misunderstood or just plain evil. And that mystery is the beauty of her. Cortese finished Ruby’s storyline with a bang, and off-screen, a real romance brewed between Ruby and Sam. Cortese and Jared Padalecki married in February 2010.

I want to see another romance worth cheering for, one that won’t change the Winchesters but rather propel their stories to new heights and terrors. Hopefully Amelia will do just that.
