Opening this week at a theatre near you:
Liam Neeson plays the commander of the United States Pacific Fleet who must lead his navy against an invading alien force – an alien force that can’t be defeated. The film also stars Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Taylor Kitsch, and Alexander Skarsgard. Battleship website
What to Watch For: Are audiences ready for another big action film, or have they had their fill with The Avengers?
Word on the Street: The film is doing great business in Europe, after opening a few weeks ago.
My Take: Just hoping someone says, “You sunk my Battleship!”
The Dictator (2012)
Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Admiral General Aladeen in this film about a ruthless dictator of a fictional North African country. On a visit to New York City, his life takes an unexpected turn, and he has to survive on his own in the Big Apple. The Dictator website
What to Watch For: Can Cohen get his audience back after the horrible box office performance of 2009′s Bruno?
Word on the Street: Cohen has gone all out on publicity for the film, appearing as the dictator on Saturday Night Live and morning shows and tried to make an appearance on the Red Carpet of the Academy Awards (who didn’t let him).
My Take: I have hope for this film, since it’s the first film that Cohen has done that isn’t based on a character he created for his Da Ali G Show.
A documentary that explores what it means to be a man in 2012. Mansome website
What to Watch For: Directed by Morgan Spurlock, who was nominated in 2005 for an Oscar for his documentary, Super Size Me.
Word on the Street: Lots of Hollywood actors make appearances in this film, including Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis and Adam Carolla.
My Take: Spurlock has turned out some great documentaries, including Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.
Darling Companion (2012)
On her way back from taking her youngest daughter and grandchild to the airport, Beth (Diane Keaton) finds a dog by the highway. Against the objections of her husband Joseph (Kevin Kline), she adopts the dog. While out on a walk at their mountain vacation home, Joseph loses the dog. Will their marriage survive? Darling Companion website
What to Watch For: Legendary director Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill) directs his first film in 10 years.
Word on the Street: This is a film for dog lovers, as almost all of the characters in the film own dogs.
My Take: It’s nice to see a funny film made for adults in this current film-world of Avengers and Battleship.
